Since 2015, the More than a Market initiative provides a platform for sharing and developing best practices of CSR
engagement by German companies in China. The initiative is currently supported by two hosts, The German Chamber of Commerce in China and the Missions of the Federal Republic of Germany in the People’s Republic of China. The initiaitve aims to:
- Showcase best CSR initiatives by German enterprises for Chinese society and their added value.
- Encourage & inspire companies to catalyze sustainable projects by providing knowledge on relevant CSR, sustainability, diversity & inclusion related topics.
- Create a strong network among like-minded companies and stakeholders on CSR activities.
The German Chamber of Commerce in China has the important assignment to support German companies regarding their business endeavors in China. It is divided into the regional centers of North China, Shanghai and its neighboring provinces, and South & South-West China; they assist all together more than 2,300 companies. However, their responsibility goes beyond the mere facilitation of trade. Therefore, the German Chamber of Commerce in China offers an extensive portfolio of services and organize a large variety of activities such as workshops, seminars, and events every year, allowing its members to network and stay informed about the latest business developments.

They represent Germany and German interests in China dealing with all aspects of foreign relations, ranging from the promotion of bilateral political relations, the support of German business interests, to the promotion of cultural, research and technology cooperation and public diplomacy. The legal and consular affairs departments of all missions issue visas to Chinese and other countries’ citizens and provide help to German citizens in China. Whereas political affairs are mainly covered by the Embassy in Beijing the Consulates focus on the promotion of economic, cultural and scientific cooperation in their respective regions.
