Chris Torrens is a Partner in Control Risks’ Greater China and North Asia region, based in Beijing. Chris advises multinational clients on risk and strategy, particularly in the areas of geopolitical, regulatory and compliance risk. He is also responsible for the company’s Chinese client base, advising both state-owned and private Chinese multinational companies on global risk management, particularly across Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.



Chris has a BA Honours degree in Modern Chinese Studies from the University of Leeds and an MBA from the China-Europe International Business School. His book, Doing Business in China, was published by The Economist Group in 2010.



Since his first stint in China in 1984-1985 Chris has lived and worked in Greater China for more than 20 years, including more 15 years in Shanghai. He joined Control Risks as the company's first dedicated China analyst in 1989 before leaving Control Risks in 1994 to work in the Hong Kong office of Batey Burn, a government relations and investment consultancy subsequently acquired by APCO. After working in various positions including as a freelance correspondent at the Economist and an Associate Director at PWC in Shanghai, Chris rejoined Control Risks in 2006 to run the company's Compliance, Forensics & Intelligence practice in China. From 2009 to 2019 Chris was based in London where he was the Partner responsible for the company's regional Global Risk Analysis practice, managing all political, operational and security risk analysis undertaken across the region. Chris has been based back in China in 2019.

Gu has engaged in foreign-related legal affairs for 17 years. Practices in Foreign Investment/Finance/M&A (merger and acquisition)/ Transference of Enterprise Ownership/ Bankruptcy Liquidation/ Participate in project feasibility demonstration and negotiation.

Phil Farrier-Price is the Co-Principal and Head of Junior School at SPGS International School Chengdu and also the Vice Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce Southwest China. With 20 years’ experience living and working in China, he has a unique blend and understanding of both British and Chinese culture, education and business.



Phil has been working for SPGSI Chengdu since its inception and was the company’s first appointment in China. After a successful launch in September 2021, the school is delighted to have seen significant growth even through the global pandemic and, most notably, was awarded ‘Best New School’ at the British Chamber of Commerce China Schools Awards.

Tony Zhang is a Tax Partner of Deloitte China specialized in International Tax and M&A area. Tony joined Deloitte Shanghai office in 2006 and has over 20 years of experience in tax and accounting profession, including the working experience with International Tax Center (ICE) of Deloitte US based in New York.



With the establishment of Western Region of Deloitte China, Tony relocated to Deloitte Chengdu office in 2016, and has been taking the tax managing partner role of Chengdu office. In addition, Tony also took regional roles for Deloitte China, including regional Talent Partner, member of China Advisory Group, regional leader of National Tax Technical Center, as well as regional leader of Life Science and Healthcare Industry.



Tony graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University with Bachelor of Economics. He is a member of China Institution of Certified Public Accountant and fellow member of CPA Australia. He was appointed as Advisory group member of CPA Australia East & Central China from 2017.
