Present & Prospects: New pattern of China's economy

2015 has been a tremendous year for China and the world financial order. While Beijing flexes its newly-gained global financial clout, basking in the initial success of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the “New Silk Road”trade and investment initiative, there are still too many political and economic uncertainties around for unbridled optimism.

With the European economy still struggling in post-crisis stupor, the impending US Fed rate hike, and increasing friction between Washington’s “pivot to Asia”and China’s regional ambitions, external conditions seem to provide more challenges than opportunities for China’s policy makers.

On the other hand, China finds itself standing at key economic crossroads. The stock market crash since June has exposed many weaknesses in China’s financial regulation, at a time when the two traditional engines of the Chinese economy—investment and exports—suffered major setbacks. Whether Premier Li Keqiang’s focus on Internet-driven entrepreneurship and “Industry 4.0”could yield concrete results in time to provide sustained growth remains to be seen.
