Michele Elam

Professor of English, Stanford University

Prof. Elam is the William Robertson Coe Professor of American Studies, the Olivier Nomellini Family University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, Professor of English, and Director of Stanford University’s interdisciplinary graduate program, Modern Thought and Literature (MTL). Former Director of the Program in African & African American Studies, she has also served as Director of Curriculum and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the English Dept. Her books include The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin (Cambridge University Press); The Souls of Mixed Folk: Race, Politics, and Aesthetics in the New Millennium
(Stanford University Press); and Race, Work, and Desire in American Literature, 1860-1930 (Cambridge University Press), and continues to publish widely on race and culture. She is currently the Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate at Stanford.
