Chu Yi-Bing was born in Beijing, China in 1966 and graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris with a Premier Prix, soon becoming the first Chinese cellist to ever win the Concours International d’Execution Musicale in 1986, the most important international cello competition in the world. For the next twenty-one years of his career, Chu was the principal cellist of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, conducted the Munich Symphony Orchestra, German Symphony Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra Halle, Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra, and Zurich Symphony Orchestra.

After decades touring Europe, Chu Yi-Bing returned to China in 2004 and was appointed cello professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In the same year, he founded the Chu Yi-Bing Cello Ensemble, touring all over the world and within China, spreading ideas of music and music education to audiences and promoting western music studies.
