In celebration of female directors, the U.S. Embassy has partnered with the Columbia Global Centers Beijing to host a screening and discussion of the documentary film "Maineland" by filmmaker Miao Wang.
The film follows the story of two affluent and cosmopolitan Chinese teenagers as they settle into a boarding school in rural blue-collar Maine. "Maineland" captures bubbly, fun-loving Stella and introspective Harry as they get adjusted to their new life in America.
We see their disappointments, challenges and triumphs and how they deal with and experience culture shock, alienation, and questions of personal identity. The documentary screening will be followed by a brief discussion with Columbia University alumni who will share their reflections and stories of their experiences studying in the United States.
