Consul General at Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai

Since July 2021, Pit Heltmann is the Consul General of Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai. From 2018 to 2020 he served as the German Ambassador in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Heltmann’s diplomatic career began in 1988 when he joined the German Federal Foreign Office. The focus of his work during the following three decades has been East Asia. Apart from serving twice at the German Embassy in Tokyo, he was Head of the Trade Promotion Bureau at the German Embassy in China. He also served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Mongolia from 1994 to 1998 and at the German Embassy in the Philippines from 2007 to 2010.

Between 2014 and 2018, Heltmann was Director of the Foreign, Security and Developmental Policy Division at the German Federal Press Office, where he was in charge of formulating the speaking notes for the Government Spokesperson on the German government's foreign, defense, and development policies.

Heltmann double-majored in Geography and Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn, Germany.

Mattie Bekink is responsible for the Economist Corporate Network’s China strategy, including programme development and client engagement across China. She also provides support to all
Economist Corporate Network programmes worldwide with a China component.

Ms Bekink has extensive experience in the public, private and policy sectors. Prior to joining The Economist Group, she was the Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission in the Netherlands. She also ran an eponymous consulting business, advising senior executives from businesses, universities and non-profit organisations on China policy, strategy, public affairs, and corporate social responsibility. Ms Bekink practiced law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, has worked with the US-Asia Law Initiative at NYU Law School and the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative China Program, and served in the legal department at General Motors China.

Ms Bekink has a BA in International Relations from Stanford University and a JD from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Brigitte Wolff is the President of EIM Executive Interim Management China, providing companies with experts for all kinds of functions and industries for permanent and interim positions, and has been working more than 18 years in China. During this period, she was a Partner at Booz&Company China (now PwC Strategy& China), MD and Partner of Management Engineers Business Consulting China and founder of Abacus Corporation Business Consulting China.

Since 2008 she is also a board member at the German Chamber of Commerce | Shanghai and its charity activities, such as the More than a Market initiative, working with German companies’ social engagement in China. Since 2017 she serves as a board member of the European Chamber of Commerce China in Shanghai. Prior to that she held management positions in Germany at Oliver Wyman and Constantia Packaging as well as Steinbeis Packaging.

She holds a German Engineer Diploma (Diplom-Ingenieur) from Technical University of Munich (TUM).
