Melanie Coerver
Event ModeratorMelanie Coerver is a sustainability advocate, community organizer and public policy leader with over 12 years experience in the environmental sector.
Before moving to Beijing, she served as one of the founding members and Board President for the Beacon Food Forest (the USA's largest permaculture project). She developed the Earth Gay program for Out for Sustainability turning it into the largest LGBTQ environmental day of action. She also served as a board president for Municipal League of King County, an organization that uses a community-led approach to evaluate candidates running for public office.
Melanie Coerver has a Master's in Public Administration from the University of Washington.
She also likes organizes brunches, book clubs, backpacking trips, and is open to other events that don't start with B.
Sara Costa
Workshop Organizer at SpittoonSara F. Costa is a Portuguese poet. She has published five poetry collections that won several literary prizes in Portugal. She has an MA in Intercultural Studies: Portuguese/Chinese from Tianjin Foreign Studies University. Her verses have been translated into several languages and featured in literary journals all across the world. As an emerging European poet, she was an invited author of the International Istanbul Poetry Festival 2017. In 2018, Sara worked in the organization of The Script Road-Macau Literary Festival and China-European Union Literary Festival in Shanghai and Suzhou. She translates Chinese poetry into Portuguese and is currently living in Beijing coordinating events for the Spittoon Beijing Based Arts Collective. She also hosts the bi-weekly Spittoon Poetry Workshop.
Miatta Momoh
Co-Founder & Business Development Manager of Kente & SilkBorn to a family of Sierra Leonean creators and innovators, Miatta has over 10 years of unique media business experience in ad operations, client services, event management, publishing, print & online marketing.
As an MBA graduate, from one of the world’s leading business schools – Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, she uses clear business objectives and data-driven marketing, to improve robust Africa-China engagement. She has managed business development and marketing responsibilities for a range of small groundbreaking start-ups, and large enterprises in China - This includes developing cross-cultural business and content for iQiyi.com and JD.COM.
Kente & Silk is a social enterprise changing the status-quo of Africa-China relations by 1) Rebranding Africa in China: hosting interactive & innovative events that promote African art, culture & business 2) Strategic Advisory Services: providing consulting, market research & partnership development services for African stakeholders seeking to engage with China 3) Product Distribution & Representation: supporting the entry of premium African products into China. Kente & Silk's flagship event is China's only Africa Week Beijing, which bought together over 1000 diverse communities to "celebrate Africa in China", this week ended with China's only African start-up pitch competition.
Miatta has a passion for building meaningful connections and community, volunteering as a LinkedIn Mentor for Americans Promoting Studies Abroad (APSA), a founding member of Women in Media, a team lead for Ladies Who Tech Beijing and she serves as a volunteer at Beijing International Christian Fellowship too.
Alice Xin Liu
Vice Chair at NüVoicesAlice Xin Liu is a writer and translator living in Beijing with 11 years of experience working in the China field. Born in China, she left aged seven and was educated in Britain, graduating from Durham University studying English Literature. Since arriving in Beijing in 2007 she has worked as a news assistant for the Guardian, China Editor for Index on Censorship, editor at the Financial Times-affiliated Danwei.org (founded by Jeremy Goldkorn), and as Managing Editor of Pathlight: New Chinese Writing, with Paper Republic. Alice has translated two books: The Letters of Shen Congwen (Yilin Publishing House) and The Problem with Me: And Other Essays on Making Trouble in China by Han Han (Simon and Schuster). Her freelance writings have appeared in n+1, Granta, the Guardian, Asymptote and other places. She is working on a novel and has been writing about her Communist granny for the last ten years. Sick of the mansplaining about China, since July 18, 2018 Alice hosts the biweekly podcast the NüVoices podcast with Joanna Chiu and Sophie Lu, hosted on SupChina.com. The NüVoices project was started by a group of China-based journalists and writers who have since moved internationally, and there are chapters of the network in (not in alphabetical order): Beijing, Berlin, London, New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Melbourne, and more.
