Liz Mohn represents the fifth generation of the Bertelsmann/Mohn family, owner of the Bertelsmann media group. She is vice-chair of the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Executive Board and its Board of Trustees. She is also chair of the Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft Executive Board and a member of the Supervisory Board at Bertelsmann SE. She serves as president of the German Stroke Foundation, an organization she founded, and chairs the board of the Liz Mohn Foundation for Culture and Music. She also chairs the Board of Trustees of the Association of German Music Schools.

As a long-standing member of the AHK family, Ms. Pohl brings a wide range of experience, knowledge and skills to the Shanghai Chamber. Before coming to Shanghai, Ms. Pohl spent 15 years in several positions at the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest in Chicago, most recently acting as the President & CEO from 2006 - 2015. Before moving to the US, she worked for 8 years in the hospitality industry in Munich, Germany.

Mr Oliver Yang is Deputy Secretary-General of Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation. He is in charge of strategy development, policy planning, external communication and advocacy. Mr Yang also leads the collaboration between multinationals and SSCLF on CSR and sustainable development agenda. He works closely with the central and local government, Chinese think-tanks, NGOs and companies to smooth communication channels and cement the relations between government authorities and business community through strategic and institutional approach. Mr Yang is a member of both U.S. China Young Leaders Forum and Asia-Europe Young Leaders Forum.

Peter Rothen (Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany)

Peter Rothen took up the position as Germany's Consul General in Shanghai in September 2014. Preceeding this appointment, he spent six years in the US, five years (2009 – 2014) as Germany’s Consul General in San Francisco and one year (2008 – 2009) at Harvard University as Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.

While working on human rights issues from 1999-2008, he witnessed the coming into being of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s initiative for a “Global Compact” – at first, its rather reluctant reception, followed by a growing acceptance and increasing support from companies all over the world.

Before his posting to the US, Peter Rothen held positions of Director for International Human Rights Policy at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, Head of the Political Department of Germany's Permanent Mission to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva/Switzerland, and he served as Deputy Director at the Foreign Ministry's Directorate-General for European Union Affairs. Earlier postings were in the Foreign Minister's Press Office and at the German Embassies in London/UK, Pretoria/South Africa and Prague/Czech Republic.

Ms. Celina Chew has been the President of Bayer Greater China Group and Chairman of Bayer (China) Limited since 2014. Ms. Chew joined the Bayer Greater China Legal Department in 1997 and assumed the position of Head of Legal for Bayer in Greater China in 1998 and later as the Country Group Head for Bayer Group in the North ASEAN Region and Managing Director at Bayer Thai Co. Ltd. in 2011.
Prior to her assignment at Bayer, she spent 8 years working as a lawyer at international law firms. Ms. Chew holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honors) degree from the University of Western Australia and a Masters of Laws (Distinction) degree from the University of Hong Kong.

Christoph Kaiser has been studying, living and working in China for over 18 years and believes that social engagement with the local community is essential for a sustainable and long-term business development.
He is Vice Chairman of the Board of the German Chamber of Commerce North China and member of the German Chamber Advisory Council Tianjin.

Birgit Riess is Director of the Business in Society program of the Bertelsmann Stiftung – a German based think tank working for the common good. In this position she and her team have been working on the conceptual basis of Corporate Social Responsibility, as well as on practical measures to promote CSR in politics, the private sector and civil society. She actively participated in the development and launch of the initiative “Partners in Responsibility”.

Ms Riess has worked on numerous publications in the area of sustainability, corporate responsibility, new societal partnerships and delivered many lectures on these issues.
She holds a Masters Degree of Economics from the University of Kassel/Germany.
Before joining the Bertelsmann Stiftung in 1996, Ms Riess had been working in the field of empirical economic and social research. Prior to taking her current position, she also was involved in the areas of corporate culture, corporate governance, industrial relations and wage policy.

Ms Riess has been appointed as a member of the National CSR Forum – an advisory council to the German government.

Mr. Koehler is the co-leader of the Business and Society Workshop and further acts as an executive coach. He previously worked as a General Manager at Freudenberg Management (Shanghai) Co.Ltd. Outside of work Mr. Koehler is very active in philanthropy and led school reconstruction and support projects after the Sichuan earthquake with Freudenberg Help e.V. and coordinated/maintained a long-term project to support the Ke De Bao Elementary School of Sichuan.

Correspondent for major German media, working as a journalist for German business weekly “Wirtschaftswoche,” daily newspapers “Neue Zuercher Zeitung” and “Berliner Zeitung,” and the business journal “brand ein” reporting about political, social, economic and cultural issues in China, Japan, South and North Korea as well as other countries in East Asia. In 2013, Bernhard Bartsch joined Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Asia team where he continues to wrap his brain around the political, economic and social developments in Asia and their impact on Germany and Europe.

Uwe Brutzer was born in Karlsruhe. In 2002, he and his wife came to Changsha, Hunan Province, where he started learning Mandarin. He also took distance learning courses in special needs education and autodidactically taught himself Chinese sign language. He and his wife were first teaching and sponsoring deaf children. In 2011, he started running the social enterprise Bach’s Bakery. His special bakery provides training and jobs for deaf people.

The WCGE is a non-profit Think Tank. We offer training in ethics to current and future leaders to equip them with systematic schemes of analysis and decision-making which can be applied in everyday work situations. Marina is a social activist focusing on the empowerment of individuals with disabilities through education, skills development and occupation; she is specializing in projects that are focusing on the inclusion of the "other" back into the society.
Marina is co-managing the first industrial workshop in China which provides respectful and dignified employment for intellectually and mentally challenged individuals.
In addition, she initiated and has been leading the Social Inclusion Academy [SIA] - a full 3 months training program for the certification of qualified Job Coaches who will lead the social integration of challenged individuals into china’s work force.
Formerly, Marina coordinated a unique integration program for young adults with intellectual disabilities, later on, founded and managed a Language training center for children with learning disabilities.

Inclusion Factory is based on the philosophy that people with disabilities can and want to be productive members of society. They specialize in working with intellectually challenged individuals in a professional working environment.

Before she joined the foundation, she worked for the German social business start-up Lemonaid Beverages GmbH in Hamburg. She studied Chinese and Economics in Bremen and Shanghai, as well as European Studies with a focus on External Relations in Hamburg. Since the beginning of 2015 she has been a part of the Asia team at the Bertelsmann Stiftung, which analyzes the changes taking place in Asia in order to develop recommendations for German and European policymakers.

Nicolas holds an Master's Degree in IT Engineering from Lille Telecom, France. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids - who occasionally let him play bass guitar with friends during the week-end.

Klaus E. Meyer is a leading scholar in the field of international business conducting research on the strategies of multinational enterprises (MNEs), especially foreign entry strategies, in emerging economies, especially Eastern Europe and East Asia.

He holds an MSc from the University of Göttingen, Germany and a PhD from London Business School, UK and has published over 60 articles in leading scholarly journals as well as five books.
He moved to China in 2011 to join CEIBS, where he teaches on a variety of strategic and international management themes, primarily to post-experience students, and currently also is the co-director of the Center for Globalization of Chinese Companies.

Professor Meyer has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB) in 2013. In 2015, he received the decade award of the Journal of International Business Studies for the most influential paper published a decade ago. Additionally, He has been an Area Editor of the Journal of International Business Studies since July 2016. In 2012-2014, he was the Vice President of the AIB, and in this function, he chaired the 2014 AIB conference held in Vancouver, Canada.

Prior to his engagement with KAS he was Head of Organizational unit political and governmental at Südwestmetall, the Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry Baden-Württemberg.
From 2005-2007 he was advisor at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia and fulltime lecturer at Universitas Pelita Harapan, Jakarta, Indonesia.
He is married and has three children.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Gerie de Pater holds a master’s degree in IT and worked five years in the IT sector. He moved to China 20 years ago and has been living in Shanghai for 15 years. He started volunteering for Home Sweet Home, an organization that helps and equips homeless and disabled people through an outreach program, in 2007. The organization provides a two-year residential program as well as a vocational program and a training program. In 2009, Mr. de Pater became the director of Home Sweet Home.
