What is a qipao?
The qipao is regarded as the Chinese national dress for women and is an iconic statement of exquisite elegance. Qipao dresses are meticulously crafted with fine silk and intricately designed fastenings, pipings, and high collars. Due to the form-fitting nature of the dress, one must have a graceful posture and body movements when wearing a qipao.
What will happen in this class?
A range of qipaos will be brought to the class for you to try on (or you can bring your own). While wearing a qipao, you will learn the basic foot work, body movements, and use of props as you walk. Cameramen and photographers will be present to enhance the glamour of the event and so that you can leave with visual memories.
Why this class?
The theme of this year's CCS Gala is gin, jazz, and 1920's and 1930s Shanghai. Many attendees to this gala will wear a qipao and need assistance in how to properly wear one. In addition, there has been a revival of interest in traditional Chinese arts, and a local community group is interested in sharing their knowledge of this tradition with the international community.
