OPC UA is increasingly establishing itself in the field of machine and plant engineering. OPC UA is an open interface standard that enables cross-platform and cross-company communication in the industrial environment. It is not just a standard for data transmission, but also a technical framework that enables the integration of various industrial devices and systems into a unified network. Machines and plants can be redesigned as required by plug & work - irrespective of which manufacturers the machines and components originate. What is already common in the office environment with network interfaces and the USB standard will also be a reality in production. Condition Monitoring, Plug and Produce, Predictive Maintenance and the optimization of production can be implemented independent of the manufacturer.
This means that no matter which manufacturer's sensors, controllers, or other industrial devices you use, as long as they all support OPC UA and its companion specifications, they can easily connect and communicate with each other. OPC UA provides a rich set of services and information models that accurately characterize the operating state, parameter settings, and control logic of devices and systems. This makes it easier for engineers to monitor, configure and troubleshoot entire industrial systems.
To realize this vision, the VDMA is working with its member companies and partners to develop OPC UA companion specifications for the machinery industry to create a global production language.

Facilitating Device Interoperability
In the past, industrial automation devices from different manufacturers often needed to use their own proprietary communication protocols, which made device integration and maintenance extremely complex. The emergence of OPC UA, however, breaks this situation. It provides a unified communication standard that enables the exchange of information between different devices without barriers, greatly simplifying the design and implementation process of industrial automation systems.

Industrial automation systems often involve a large amount of production data and critical control logic, which may lead to serious production accidents in the event of malicious attacks or misuse.OPC UA has built-in rich security mechanisms, including authentication, data encryption, and access control, to ensure the security of data in the process of transmission and storage, and to effectively prevent potential security risks.

To further promote OPC UA in the Chinese market, this year VDMA Machine Information Interoperability Department (VDMA MII), VDMA Shanghai Representative Office and GMECS Shanghai will jointly organize an OPC UA event in China. The half-day event aimed to invite 50 โ 100 industry experts from VDMA member companies, the Chinese machinery and equipment manufacturing industry, and the customer industries.
