Info for New Members - About Supply Chain Roundtables

The roundtable series aims for Top Executives and Managers from VDMA members in China to inform them about current lead topics that affect their business.

In cooperation with selected industrial and business experts, the target is to provide VDMA members with concerns and need strategic guidance for their operations in China. During the event, you will have this unique opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with your peers and learn from the experts and each other.

The topic of this roundtable is related to supply chain management, sourcing, and localization strategies. Due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, many companies are facing uncertainties in doing business in China. What is the short-term and long-term effect on strategic decision-making for investments, localization, and overall supply chain management?

Topic 1: Experience sharing: Importance of localization and the required skills for strategic sourcing

Introduction&Outline:

The pandemic had a negative impact on the supply chain which became disruptive. The prolonged lead-times, paired with high transportation costs and in general the insecurity which causes headaches for any planning (production, sales fulfillment) made it clear that localization is an essential part of the future supply strategy. The question is how to do it in a smart way and what is required to carry-out strategic sourcing in an efficient way?

๏ปฟ

  • Importance of procurement optimization
  • Different grades of localization
  • True localization
  • Root causes of inefficient sourcing
  • Strategic sourcing โ€“ setting the focus right
  • Approaching new ways of supplier search
  • Learning from different industries
  • Impact on the balance sheet

Topic 2: SCM and Purchasing transformation as part of a “local for local” SME’s China strategy out of a global set-up and footprint

Introduction&Outline:

Since the introduction of the made in China 2025 strategy by the state council in May 2015 and the pandemic related disruptions in supply chains and international travel especially to China, "local for local" SCM and Purchasing departments need to be independent and resilient to manage and master related challenges.

Especially for SME's with a strong dependency on HQ capabilities and support this becomes a challenge and potential business risk.

Having a strong China strategy and implementation-plan is key to communicate and establish needed organizational changes with HQ to be increase the resilience in times of V.U.C.A.

Alfmeier Automotive Systems Shanghai started its local China strategy process as part of the global cooperate strategy in late 2017 and first initiatives have been kicked off by end of 2018. How did this change the "local for local" capabilities of a SME in China especially with the look at SCM and Purchasing and how did these capabilities perform during the pandemic and post-pandemic related stress-tests?

๏ปฟ

  • How to develop / build a strong local team?
  • Strategy and implementation-plan as part of the communication internally and towards HQ?
  • How to make the best out of both worlds?
