Whether it's women working in male-dominated industries or unconventional businesses, they regularly face gender stereotypes and gender-oriented prejudice. Therefore, in our ever-changing global environment, discrimination and prejudice are becoming increasingly important to manage. Managers and entrepreneurs must have the ability to change cultural assumptions and overcome gender bias in their work environment. But how to achieve this goal?
In this webinar, the Nanjing Women's Forum invites three successful women from different industries to share their personal story on how they navigate male-dominated workplaces and business cultures. We invite all genders to join us for this interactive session of experience exchange and learnings, followed by a discussion between our panelists and a Q&A session with the audience.

The Nanjing Women's Forum (NWF) offers professional women in the international business community opportunities to connect with peers in Nanjing and broaden their business experience across industries and cultures.

Sue Northcott
Admissions Director of Nanjing International SchoolSue has been the Admissions Director at Nanjing International School for over 7 years where she has continued to build the reputation of NIS as the best international school in Nanjing. She is a qualified UK solicitor and has worked all over the globe over the last 40 years including UK, Egypt, Sri Lanka and China. She was Deputy Director of Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, UK for 6 years where she was responsible for Women’s and Children’s Services. Sue also worked at the British Council in Sri Lanka and taught at the Overseas School of Colombo. In UK she was part of a team of educators supporting excluded children and working closely with all stakeholders to keep children most at risk from entering the criminal justice system.
With a strong service and volunteer ethos to her varied career, she served in England as a Local Councillor under PM, John Major, worked with Women’s Aid in Aberdeen and as Secretary of the Elton Society the village where she lived before moving to China.
Sue is most proud of the three men in her life – her husband Simon of over 40 years, and their two sons. One an international arbitration lawyer based in London and the other working for the sports management company Wasserman.

Co-Founder of Shanghai D&I ConsultingCharlene Liu was born in Malaysia and has lived in the US, Singapore, and now Shanghai, China. She is an engineer, a social change maker, and a community builder. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BSc in Electrical Engineering and has 20 years of working experience in different areas of the Semiconductor & Electronics industry, ranging from design, engineering, manufacturing, project management to sales and marketing. She has also experience with events, corporate innovation, and management consulting at PwC.
Charlene has 14 years of community leadership, commercial event
management, and Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) advocacy experience. In 2009, she co-founded ShanghaiPRIDE, an annual festival run entirely by volunteers that promotes diversity, in 2014 Q-Events, an event management company, in 2016 Ladies Who Tech, a social impact community for women in STEM, and in 2019 Shanghai D&I Consulting. Charlene is now embarking on a full-time journey organizing events and managing the planning, operations, finance, and sponsorship of these platforms.
In 2014, she and team ShanghaiPRIDE were awarded Shanghai Hero by Time Out Shanghai, and in 2018, Best Event Organizer in East China by Huodongxing.
Johanna Spee
Founder of Zero GravityJohanna has over five years working experience in different industries: She started as an Environmental Manager for a consulting company in Germany and continued working as Regional Manager of the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai China for over three years. Nevertheless, her passion over the last five years has always been pole dance. Following her passion, she decided to enter the fitness industry by starting her own pole dance studio brand in Shanghai.
Natalie Sonnenberg
Lawyer in Data Protection and IT Law (maternity leave)Natalie is a German lawyer who studied law in Berlin (Germany), Madrid (Spain) and Cracow (Poland) and is bilingual in German and Polish. Before moving to Nanjing she was working in the legal department for Europe‘s leading consumer electronic retailer MediaMarktSaturn. She is specialized in IT Law and Data Protection Law. Together with her Data Protection Law colleagues she won the JUVE Award 2018 for best in-house team for best implementation of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation for all MediaMarktSaturn companies worldwide. Before going on maternity leave in 2019 she successfully completed the training to become a by state certified IT Law solicitor.
