Event Summary

Join us this Friday for a member meeting in an all new format.

Following the request of our members we will use our member meetings to get to know each other better and discuss our club activities.

Our new president Harriet Gaywood will kick off this new format by introducing herself and sharing with us her China wisdom – accumulated in more than two decades on the ground.

Harriet will also moderate this member meeting on the subject of time as currency and we invite you to share your ideas.

The Currency of Time

Giving money can help society but nothing is more valuable than giving your time and sharing your skills. Society needs you.

Whether you work in an NGO, the corporate world or a start-up, any time that you can spare to share new ideas, inspire entrepreneurs, connect people, offer IT know-how, mentor young people, play with children or help promote a local cause can contribute to a better society.

With social entrepreneurship in its DNA, Rotary FreshStart aims to explore social innovation by creating a community that is motivated and committed to making the world a better place via Knowledge, Fellowship and Action.

Rotary FreshStart believes that change comes from small things – seeds of thought, small positive gestures and single actions that inspire larger change.

Rotary FreshStart believes in looking forward and with this in mind will focus on the needs of the next generation whether soft skills or addressing global issues – always through the lens of 'social innovation.

A short bio:

President of FreshStart Shanghai, Harriet is passionate about community engagement and the importance of giving time. Harriet brings a perspective as a volunteer, parent and nearly 25 years in China.

In her day job, Harriet is Managing Director of Teneo, a global CEO advisory firm. She spends her days working with senior executives and challenging them to think about their responsibilities as leaders including how they support employees and the wider community tackling issues ranging from diversity, digital, climate change and geopolitics.

Meanwhile she has two children who ask enquiring questions of the world every day and encourage her to give ideas and do her bit to steer the world on a course so that they have a liveable world in the future.

Harriet first came to China to study Chinese Music at Shanghai Music Conservatory in 1994 which started her on a journey to learning Chinese, working for the British Government, international communication firms and most recently China's largest communication firm before joining Teneo.

She is also an ultra-runner and 'cellist. Most mornings of the week, she leads early morning community workouts across Shanghai for China's largest volunteer-led fitness community.
