How the West Got China Wrong: Three Points in Modern History
---Talk and Q&A with longtime foreign correspondent Melinda Liu
The U.S. China relationship has cycled through waves of enchantment and disenchantment, and we're again entering an era where the discourse is increasingly ridden with anxiety and conjecture. Join the Shanghai FCC as veteran foreign correspondent Melinda Liu highlights three points in time where the U.S. "got" China wrong, beginning with the hopes the Americans pinned on the ascent of Deng Xiaoping.
Today, China is showing a more confident face to the world via initiatives such as Belt and Road, military parades and efforts to exert political pressure at home and abroad. Does Beijing care how the world perceives of its foreign ambitions? How does the Chinese leadership balance that with domestic priorities?
In these questions are the crux of a Western misunderstanding of Chinese priorities. Q&A to follow. Blackbird's chef will prepare a special menu.
