How the West Got China Wrong: Three Points in Modern History

---Talk and Q&A with longtime foreign correspondent Melinda Liu

The U.S. China relationship has cycled through waves of enchantment and disenchantment, and we're again entering an era where the discourse is increasingly ridden with anxiety and conjecture. Join the Shanghai FCC as veteran foreign correspondent Melinda Liu highlights three points in time where the U.S. "got" China wrong, beginning with the hopes the Americans pinned on the ascent of Deng Xiaoping.

Today, China is showing a more confident face to the world via initiatives such as Belt and Road, military parades and efforts to exert political pressure at home and abroad. Does Beijing care how the world perceives of its foreign ambitions? How does the Chinese leadership balance that with domestic priorities?

In these questions are the crux of a Western misunderstanding of Chinese priorities. Q&A to follow. Blackbird's chef will prepare a special menu.

Melinda Liu has been the Beijing bureau chief of Newsweek since 1998, and is one of Newsweek's most experienced foreign correspondents. She has covered firsthand China’s post-Mao modernization, the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan and later ouster of the Taliban, the liberation of Kuwait, the fall of Saddam Hussein, and U.S. military interventions in Somalia and Haiti. In 2006, she won the Shorenstein journalism award in recognition of her reporting on Asia. Melinda is researching American aviators in WWII China, and in 2017 co-directed with Tian Ji (see below) a short documentary film on the Doolittle Raiders and their mission to bomb Japan in April 1942.

In March 1980, Melinda became Newsweek’s first Beijing Bureau Chief, living and working in the Chinese capital until 1982. She returned to Beijing in 1998 as Bureau Chief. From the mid-80’s to late 90’s, she was based in Hong Kong and Washington D.C., often travelling to cover global conflicts as a war correspondent. To report on the toppling of Saddam Hussein, Melinda was one of few American journalists in Baghdad during the 2003 U.S.-led “shock and awe” bombing of the Iraqi capital. Her report “Eyewitness Baghdad” featured in Newsweek’s special war issue which won a National Magazine Award that year.

In addition to overseas assignments, Melinda was Newsweek’s diplomatic correspondent based in Washington D.C. from 1992-1998. Prior to joining Newsweek in 1979, she was the China Economic Correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review and Taipei contributor to the Washington Post and CBS News. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Melinda graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. From 2005-2008 she was President of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC).
