Dear Members and Friends of SwissCham Shanghai,

According to official announcements, the Chinese government expects the economy to grow around 5% this year. Important economic pillars such as the real estate and construction sectors as well as consumption will have to pick up and show stable growth so that this goal can be achieved; even more so in the view of slowing exports growth.

With the first quarter behind us, where do we stand in terms of economic recovery and what can we expect for the rest of the year? And what does the current growth path mean for foreign companies and where are the opportunities and challenges for investment?

To answer these questions and provide an outlook for the rest of 2023, SwissCham Shanghai is delighted to invite Dr. Ibrahim Chowdhury. He is the Senior Economist for China at the World Bank. In his presentation, Dr. Chowdhury will reflect on recent economic developments, policy responses, the short and longer-term outlook and the risks to the outlook, based on the World Bank's newest growth projections.

It is also our pleasure to have with us Dr. Huang Yi. He is a Professor of Finance at Fudan University in Shanghai. Dr. Huang will provide a financial overview of China's economy and elaborate on current challenges and future opportunities in the second largest economy in the world.

Senior Economist for China at The World Bank

Ibrahim Chowdhury is the Senior Economist for China based in the World Bank’s Beijing office. Before joining the Beijing office, Ibrahim spent four years in Cairo where he led the Bank’s work on economic policy analysis on Egypt. He joined the World Bank in 2012 in the Credit Risk Department, where he was the country coordinator for a range of countries, with a particular focus on the Middle East and North Africa region. In this function, he was responsible for conducting macroeconomic assessments and projections for many middle-income countries.
Prior to joining the World Bank, Ibrahim spent three years at the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund. As an Advisor to the Executive Director of the Switzerland-led
constituency he prepared policy and strategy positions on many global economic and financial issues.
Ibrahim also has central bank experience having spent half a decade at the Swiss National Bank in Zurich. Earlier in his career, he held the position of Assistant Professor at the economics department of the University of Cologne, Germany, and worked for Merrill Lynch in London. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics from the Universities of Bonn and London, and a Ph.D. degree in Economics from the University of Oxford.

Prior to joining Fudan in 2021, Professor Huang was Pictet Chair in Finance and Development and associate professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva, Switzerland) and a research affiliate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) , the Asian Bureau of Finance and Economic Research (ABFER) and Academic Fellow at the Luohan Academy.
Prof. Huang was an economist in the research department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and a research associate of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the Institute of Digital Finance of Peking University. He also has been a research fellow at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research as well as the visiting positions at London Business School, Imperial College Business School, the MIT Sloan School of Management, and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. Prof. Huang also serves at the Council on Global Economic Imbalances at the World Economic Forum.
Prof. Huang’s research consists of international macro and finance; macro&finance and digital economics & fintech and Entrepreneurship. His recent research focuses on the influence of corporation’s financing and investment to financial market in the era of globalization. His research is published in academic journals such as the Review of Economic Studies , Journal of Finance and Management Science.
Professor Huang gained his Master’s degree from the China Center for Economics Research, Peking University, and his Ph.D. in International Macroeconomic and Finance from the London Business School.
