Dear Members and Friends of SwissCham,

It is probably an understatement to say that 2022 was an extraordinary year for China and for all involved in doing business with the country.

Covid-related restrictions, a major downturn in the large real estate sector, sluggish domestic consumption, considerable supply chain disruptions, GDP growth importantly below the government target and geopolitical tensions have brought the business confidence of Swiss - and other foreign - companies to an all-time low. The 2022 Swiss Business in China Survey, carried out in partnership with the Sino-Swiss institutions and the University of St. Gallen, clearly illustrate this situation and brings elements to foresee future economic developments in China.

Besides, while 2022 may be remembered as a disruptive year for businesses because of its lack of economic predictability, it may also be remembered as the year when the political environment became very predictable. In fact, this new basis allows for a new predictability in economic terms, also.

Swiss companies are actually well-positioned to benefit from the upcoming development. What can be expected in terms of economic policy and how Swiss businesses can further benefit will be discussed tonight.

Best regards,

Your SwissCham Team
