Dear Members and Friends of SwissCham,

Switzerland and China have a long-standing bilateral relationship and strong economic ties. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted many channels of communication. As the world is slowly recovering from the pandemic, Swiss government officials and business people are now re-connecting with their Chinese counterparts and re-shaping their relationships. What are the main challenges in the process?

The event will consist of three parts – a briefing by the Swiss Ambassador, presentations from senior executives of Richemont & Clariant, and a panel discussion.

Ambassador's Briefing: A presentation by the Swiss Ambassador to China, Jürg Burri, discussing the current status of the bilateral relationship between Switzerland and China, and their future perspectives.
Companies Presentations: Jenny Gu, CEO of Richemont China and Andy Walti, VP, Head of Region China & APAC at Clariant will share their experiences in re-connecting with business partners and headquarters and their views on doing business in China.
Panel Discussion: A moderated panel discussion with the Ambassador and the business representatives discussing the future prospects and challenges in bilateral relationship between Switzerland and China.

The event will close with a buffet dinner, where participants can further network and share their insights and experiences with the guests and the Ambassador.

Jürg Burri

Ambassador of Switzerland to the PRC, Mongolia and the DPRK

Jürg Burri was born in 1965 in Thun, Switzerland. After graduating from the University of Berne
with a licentiate in Contemporary History and Political Sciences, he briefly worked as journalist
before joining the Swiss Foreign Service in 1996.
He completed his diplomatic training with positions in the United Nations Section at the
headquarters in Berne and with the Swiss Mission to the United Nations in New York.
From 1998 to 2002, he was posted in the United Nations Section in Berne, working on
preparations for Switzerland’s accession to the United Nations.
Subsequently, he was appointed as Science, Education and Space Counselor to the Mission
of Switzerland to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, until 2006.
From the same year until 2009, he served as the Minister/Deputy Head of Mission at the
Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing.
Upon his return to Berne in 2009, he was appointed Deputy Director of the State Secretariat
for Education, Research and Innovation with the Federal Department of Home Affairs. From
2013 to 2014, he was the Head of the Research and Innovation Directorate for the State
Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation in the Federal Department of Economic
Affairs, Education and Research.
From 2014 to 2018, he was the Director General of the Consular Directorate of the Federal
Department of Foreign Affairs in Berne.
In 2018, he was appointed as Ambassador of Switzerland in Poland with residence in Warsaw,
where he served until 2022.
Since September 2022, Jürg Burri is the Ambassador of Switzerland to the People’s Republic
of China, Mongolia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, with residence in Beijing.

Jenny is the CEO at Richemont China, responsible for overall operational leadership and support to enable and empower Maison's China strategy and operations.
Prior to Richemont, Jenny has 30 years’ experience in Management consultancy, FMCG, sports and retail sector, working in multinational companies and private equity firms including Nike and TPG Capital. Jenny’s expertise includes: General management, sales and retail, finance, strategic planning and supply chain management, company transformation. She advises clients on strategy as well as operational effectiveness and efficiency. Jenny’s career has spanned China, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.
Jenny has an Executive MBA from Kellogg-HKUST. She has also both a master degree and a bachelor degree in Philosophy from Fudan University.
Jenny obtained her ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) membership since 1998. She was past President 2019-2020, and a member on ACCA Council during 2009 - 2021, has chaired and served on various committees including as Chair Person on the Council Board.
Currently Jenny is an INED on LINK’s board, also serve on Audit & Risk Management Committee.

Andy Walti

VP, Head of Region China & APAC, Clariant

Andy Walti was appointed Head of Region China & APAC at Clariant as of January 2021 and is based in Shanghai, China. He had previously taken over as Head of Region China in November 2019.
Andy, a Swiss national, has been with Clariant for over 20 years and has proven management, business and finance expertise gained through roles spanning numerous countries, levels, functions and business units. Prior to undertaking his current leadership role in China, Andy was Head of Region Middle East & Africa (MEA) of Clariant from 2015 to 2019 based in Dubai, UAE.
Andy gained valuable integration and turn-around experience as Vice President and Head of Business Line Medical Specialties based in Paris, France (2012-2015). This included an acquisition Andy led in Dongguan, China during 2014, which also benefited from his earlier role in Shanghai, China as Regional Head of Business Unit Paper Specialties Asia-Pacific (2008 to 2012).
Before this role, he honed his general management expertise in emerging markets, serving as Managing Director and Country President for Clariant in Johannesburg, South Africa (2005 to 2008), and in Casablanca, Morocco (2002 to 2005).
Andy started his career as a finance trainee in Basel, Switzerland at Sandoz in 1994, followed by several Controlling positions in the Netherlands, France and Thailand. In 1999, he joined Clariant as Finance & Administration Director in Bangkok, Thailand.
With a career of more than 25 years outside his native Switzerland, Andy is an international executive with a proven track record in manoeuvring challenging business environments coupled with a deep understanding of cross-cultural issues, always putting people at the centre of his attention.
Andy Walti received his Master’s degree in business administration, specializing in Accounting and Finance from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland in 1993. He is married with three children, one of whom was born in Shanghai in 2009.
