Event Details

Dear Parents (and Teens),

We're heading to Tokyo for the next APJ Teen Shabbaton Friday, November 15— Sunday, November 17, 2019 (We may actually fly on Thursday, November 14 — details below).

This Shabbaton is designed for teens who are in 8th grade and older/will have celebrated their Bar/Bat Mitzvah before December 31, 2019. Our Shanghai teens will join others from across Asia to celebrate Shabbat, explore Tokyo including visits to Asakusa and Kamakura, take part in a social action project, and participate in a discussion with an Israeli diplomat. Of course there will be plenty of time to hang out with old friends and make new ones.

I've already heard from a few of your families that your teens are interested in attending the Shabbaton. Now we've reached the point where we need to have firm commitments from teens who will be participating, so that flights can be booked.

Here's the scoop:

1) Location — We will be staying at the JCC in Tokyo. Experience has shown that the teens love staying together and prefer it to home hospitality. Additionally, hotels in Tokyo are extremely expensive and staying at the JCC allows us to keep the price of the retreat fairly reasonable. Teens will need to bring a sleeping bag and will be provided with air mattresses. We will be sleeping all together (with adult supervision) in a large lounge. There are no private bedrooms/sleeping areas available.

There is a shower available in the mikvah for teens who would like to use it.

2) Who's coming? — We know for sure there will be teens from Tokyo and Hong Kong. We also expect teens from Singapore and Beijing, and maybe others as well. Julia will be going to help lead activities and supervise as the Kehilat Shanghai chaperone. Rabbis and Youth Workers from the other communities will join as well. All of these Jewish professionals have extensive experience working with teens, and together we will lead the programming and provide supervision.

3) Transportation to/from Tokyo— we will take the following flights:

Currently the cost of flights is around RMB 1800 per person. Once a few teens are registered, we will finalize a flight option and book!

Once you let me know your teen is joining us for sure, we will discuss flight arrangements. You can also use your own agent/book your own ticket if you prefer but please confirm with me that your teen is going.

4) Cost of the Shabbaton: The cost of the Shabbaton itself is RMB 2500 which includes Friday breakfast, Shabbat dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and Sunday brunch, touring, and activities, as well as covers the cost of Julia as a chaperone. Teens will need to bring money for Friday lunch in Asakusa and Saturday dinner in Shibuya, and to purchase souvenirs and any "airport snacks." If finances are a concern, please speak to me in confidence. Scholarships may be available.

5) Food Allergies/Sensitivities: Our host is aware of some teens with common allergies or sensitivities. Please let me know if your teen has any food allergies or issues so that our hosts can make the accommodations necessary to insure everyone's health and safety. Please feel free to be in touch with me to discuss these concerns in more detail.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?Please confirm with me via email that your teen will be taking part by Wednesday, October 30 or earlier if possible. Even if you or your teen have previously indicated an interest in participating, we need you to reconfirm. I'm pretty sure we have "critical mass" but once I'm certain we do, I'll let you know to go ahead and buy your plane ticket.

Over the past five years, APJ Shabbatonim have created some wonderful friendships between our teens and those in Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Beijing. I hope your teen will take advantage of this opportunity to grow closer to other Kehilat Shanghai teens and to strengthen their connection to other Progressive Jewish teens across Asia.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything further, please don't hesitate to be in touch with me.
