Daoism – A new corporate ethics paradigm for (multinational) businesses in China?

In recent years, awareness has increased in China regarding the necessity of ethical values and practices in business. Yet, ethical values and practices are deeply rooted in a country's cultural and social order. This might pose a dilemma for multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in China: Which code of ethics should be adopted? Are ethical values universal? Should some values be preferred over others?

While we can see steady growth in localization of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices among MNEs in China, localization of ethical principles has so far been neglected. While localization of HRM practices mainly requires a solid understanding of contemporary Chinese culture, implementing ethical values and practices requires a profound knowledge of China's moral and philosophical heritage. Until today, MNEs corporate ethics strategies do not reflect a deep understanding of Chinese cultural heritage. This results in leadership practices and organizational culture often remaining Western-centric, missing an essential aspect of business integration, and passing on local values.

What is Daoism?

Daoism is one of China's most important indigenous philosophies. It emerged roughly around the same time as Confucianism in the 4th century BC. Yet unlike Confucianism, it does not represent a social philosophy, but rather puts an emphasis on balance with the natural environment and the cosmological order.

The German Chamber of Commerce in China | Shanghai, in partnership with The British Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, invites you to a workshop introducing the ethical background of Daoism and how to apply its values in corporate culture and leadership. During this interactive session, participants will learn more about the philosophy of Daoism and explore various ways of applying it in their own organizations.

We welcome HR, CSR, and PR professionals, as well as anyone interested to experience a fresh approach to business, ethics, and philosophy, to join this event!
