Speakers: Stewart Paterson is the author of China, Trade and Power: Why the West's Economic Engagement Has Failed, and a 25-year veteran of global capital markets as equities researcher, strategist and fund manager. Gao Ting is Managing Director and Head of China Strategy in the Equities Research Department at UBS Securities in Shanghai.

Stewart's book argues that today's U.S.-China tensions can be traced to China's accession to the WTO in 2001, without subsequent and critical economic reforms. China's integration into the global economy lifted hundreds of millions of its people out of poverty and cemented the legitimacy of the Communist Party. But the unintended impacts on standards of living and social inequality in the West have sown discord, raising questions about the effectiveness of Western liberal economic models that are far from resolved. Stewart's book was sponsored by the Hong Kong-based Hinrich Foundation, which researches the conditions for sustainable international trade.

About the speakers:

Stewart Paterson has worked in London, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Singapore in senior roles with Credit Suisse, Credit Suisse First Boston, CLSA and most recently as a Partner and Portfolio Manager of Tiburon Partners LLP. He has covered the full spectrum of global equities markets strategy, seeing first hand how China's rise has shaped the global financial system.

Gao Ting has worked in senior research and strategy roles at UBS since 2010, after joining from China International Capital Corp, where he was chief macroeconomist and A-share strategist. Prior to working in finance, he was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Missouri.
