Building Lifelong Skills Using Real World Content: A New Approach for Macau

Dr Micaela de Senna Fernandes

Lifelong learning skills, such as creativity and problem solving, can empower students to shape their future, and help them navigate life beyond school. However, as these skills are so broad in scope, teachers and educators may sometimes think it takes too much time or effort to help students practice them in the English classroom. In fact, skill development beyond just language learning is not only important to do, but also achievable, with the right approach.

In this interactive workshop, the presenter will share perspectives on how teachers can use real world content to support skill-building and language acquisition simultaneously. Participants will come away with an understanding of exciting and useful projects and activities already being used in classrooms in Macau today.

Creating Connection and Understanding through Real World images

Molly Ferrill

Images hold the unique power to transport us and give insight into places and situations we maynever have otherwise encountered. Not only does photography allow us to better understand the greater world around us, but through these images we are able to feel a connection and compassion for those who we may never have the chance to meet in person. Perhaps these images can even inspire us to take positive action when needed.

In this talk, National Geographic Explorer Molly Ferrill will share some photographic stories she has told with support from National Geographic Society, specifically focusing on creating a compassion for and understanding of the natural world, wildlife, and the way that different people and cultures interact with nature on our quickly changing planet.
