Speaker: Shengjun (Gary) Liu, President, China Financial Reform Institute
U.S.-China trade tensions are escalating, with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to impose another $200 billion+ of tariffs against Chinese imports to force Beijing to reduce its massive trade surplus overnight and curb the nation's ambition to become a technology superpower. China will respond with tit-for-tat measures in a countermove that could drag down the global economy and lead to rising confrontation with America. While there is understandable pressure on China to resist the U.S. threats, Dr. Liu argues that the trade conflict offers an opportunity for the Chinese leadership to push through much needed financial and other structural reforms that would strengthen the world's second-largest economy in the long run. By looking past the here and now, China could ultimately become the winner of the trade war.
