Nigeria’s GDP Size is $493 billion based on nominal GDP (2016) having shrunk from a high of $574 billion in 2014 due to the slump in global oil prices. In terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) , Nigeria’s GDP stands at $1.1 trillion.
Due to the country’s high growth potential, it is regarded as a MINT country. MINT is an acronym referring to the economies of Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey. The term was originally coined by Fidelity Investments, a Boston-based asset management firm, and was popularized by Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs, who had created the term BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India & China).
According to the United States Government, Nigeria is expected to become a top 15 economy in the world by 2030. Many economic analysts expect it will happen sooner.
Security
Security is a major concern for many first-time Chinese visitors to Nigeria. It is a fact that there are isolated incidents of personal safety issues, particularly limited to Maiduguri, a city in Borno State which borders the countries of Chad & Niger. The Federal Government of Nigeria has been able to confine such issues to a small area and is working on eliminating the security threats altogether.
It should be noted that Maiduguri is almost 3 hours by air from Lagos and the tour will not include a visit to Maiduguri.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian with a net-worth of $16 billion drives himself around within the country and when asked about security advised foreign businessmen and diplomats outside Africa to make concerted effort to visit the continent and discover the changes that have taken place so as to correct some of the existing negative perceptions.
He said, “Don’t be lazy. (Visit Nigeria) and find the real story for yourself. Things have changed.”
