The global warming over the past years has caused a series of disasters including rising sea levels, extinction of species and extreme weather, which have greatly affected the ecological environment. When the problems are gradually taken seriously, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement, and other climate-related conventions have been introduced, and the promotion of sustainable development has become a global consensus. Green building certifications have expanded from design to operation, as buildings seldom perform as designed if not maintained well. Government investigations show that poor maintenance, improper technical decisions are the source of most environmental or safety accidents. Predictive Maintenance is often claimed to be the “low handing fruit” of Industry 4.0, yet it is seldom implemented beyond a showcase. Toyota famously put Preventive Maintenance at the center of what later became World Class Manufacturing or Lean, yet in most plants, maintenance comes last. The improvement potential is enormous!
