2020 was supposed to be a record year for women in film. Not only were 5 of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year directed by women including Birds of Prey, Mulan, Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Eternals,it would have been a banner year for the representation of female stories all over the world.
But instead, the pandemic caused the global film industry to grind to a halt. Movie theaters closed, blockbuster release dates were postponed, Film Festivals were canceled, and film sets were shut down.
Despite all that, women in the film industry remain more resilient than ever and have an even richer and more inspiring story to tell.
On April 28, three incredible women – a Director, a Writer-Director, and an Actress – will share their own unique pandemic story and how they see the pandemic has transformed the entire industry.
Here is a brief introduction of our speakers:
Jane Zheng, Producer
Jane is the producer of "The Farewell" by Lulu Wang and "Dead Pigs" by Cathy Yan.
Kate Wang-Tuo, Writer-Director
Kate is an NYU-trained writer-director based in Beijing. Her recent film was just selected by the BAFTA qualifying festival.
Augusta, Actress
August is from New Zealand but her father is originally from Beijing. She has been acting in film and television in China for the past 5 years with her most recent release being Guanhu's "The Eight Hundred."
