In a series of Chinese measures aimed at countering sanctions of foreign countries, the so-called "Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law" is the latest countermeasure, which came into force on June 10th 2021. Although the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law only contains 16 articles, it presents a wide-ranging legal framework aimed at retaliating sanctions imposed by foreign governments and at preventing Chinese individuals and organizations from suffering any damages resulting therefrom. At its core, the law allows the punishment of foreign individuals and entities who directly or indirectly participate in the drafting, decision-making or implementation of foreign discriminatory restrictions on Chinese citizens and entities.
Export-oriented German SMEs in particular may see themselves caught between the political fronts of different legislations in Germany and China and exposed to the possible countermeasures, which the new Chinese law provides for.
This online event will provide a brief introduction to the basic concept of the law and outline possible impacts to foreign companies operating in China.
