Recent years have seen the increasing digital transformation of businesses resulting in the success of e-commerce platforms as new market places, fast-paced growth in the AI-related industries and big-data analysis as well as digitalization of production, distribution and delivery processes. Intellectual property (IP) is a crucial element of digital economy as it drives innovation and provides SMEs with comparative advantage over competitors and increases trust in SMEs' products or services. While digital economy gives rise to new IP risks such online infringements and misappropriation of valuable information via hacking, it also provides new solutions for IP protection such as the use of blockchain technologies and sophisticated notice and take-down systems on e-commerce platforms. In terms of IP enforcement, internet courts have really been speeding up the enforcement procedures. To be successful in digital economy, SMEs should focus on protecting their IP by adopting a comprehensive IP strategy taking into account the needs of digital economy.
