The Beijing Women's Network holds Monthly Spotlight Dinners to bring our membership together and share professional and personal experiences. Each dinner we spotlight one of our members, who then leads a discussion centered around their own experiences or a topic of choice.

Too often, women sell ourselves short in the career marketplace – why? By waiting until we feel ‘ready’, women often miss out on career opportunities. In this spotlight dinner for Beijing Women’s Network, Amanda Barry will reflect on her own ten years of career building in Beijing, offer her perspectives on recent research around women’s career choices, and lead a group discussion about how to embrace the possibility of failure on the longer pathway to a successful and rewarding career.

    Dr. Amanda Barry is Director of Academics, Faculty and Research at The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, a research, education and study abroad program at University of International Business and Economics, Beijing. She is responsible for leading and developing the Center’s academic and research staff and programs, with a particular focus on professional and career development for young people. Amanda holds a Ph.D. in Indigenous history from the University of Melbourne (Australia) and has published, presented and taught internationally. Amanda moved to Beijing in 2005 and has worked in business consulting, education, culture and the arts including at the Australian Embassy and Peking University. Amanda is also actively involved in Beijing’s cultural life, regularly performing with the International Festival Chorus Beijing. Amanda speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and lives in Beijing with her husband and daughter.
