Lecture Abstract: The Future of Euro
The eurozone has been hit by a succession of crises since 2010. Coming after an initial successful decade, those crises have raised new interrogations on the viability of the monetary union. On one side, traditional skeptics see the current situation as a vindication of their doubts. One the other side, federalists would argue that a further jump into fiscal union is necessary for the Euro to survive. Neither of those “corner” views can actually inspire future policies. Building on its success and resilience, the eurozone will overcome current difficulties through incremental, but steady, progress towards integration – the banking union being a good example. Current conflicts about fiscal transfers and redistribution should not be allowed to degenerate further into open political warfare. Instead, careful analysis and, maybe, some further institutional reform, will help and define a new, post crisis, equilibrium.
