Event Details
Justine is a conservationist who is working to save the wildlife and wild spaces of the high altitude areas of Central Asia-the roof of the world. In the past 6 years Justine has worked with international efforts across Asia’s high altitude belt to protect one of the world’s most remote and elusive carnivores – the snow leopard. She is currently a regional ecologist for the Snow Leopard Trust, based in Beijing and working in China and Mongolia.
While growing up in India, she was fortunate to see her first wild tiger at the age of 7. She was also exposed to the rich traditions of ethnic minorities and was struck by the challenges they face in balancing development and preserving their cultural identities and their ecological habitat. She has worked with local communities on diverse conservation projects in the remote areas of Cambodia, India, South Africa, Canada, Panama and Ghana.
Justine completed her Masters in Conservation Science at Imperial College, London and a PhD at Beijing Forestry University, the latter concentrating on the conservation of snow leopards in China. Justine is also a National Geographic Young Explorer, and is funded by National Geographic in a range of conservation and exploration projects. When Justine is not working to save the snow leopard you can find her teaching Acroyoga and yoga classes to the Beijing community.
Justine will share her journey saving snow leopards and her stories in the wild. She will also share her challenges of being one of very few female scientists working in conservation of snow leopards, as well as being a female leader leading a team of men under extreme field conditions.
There is no extra cost for spotlight dinners. Participants only have to split the cost for the dinner (which will be less than 100RMB per person). Please email us in advance if you have any dietary restrictions.
Please note that the Spotlight Dinners are female-only events. All other Beijing Women's Network events are open to all genders.
